THE VERY HEART AND ESSENCE OF CHRISTIANITY

“For the life of the flesh is in the blood, and I have given it to you upon the altar to make atonement for your souls, for it is the blood that makes atonement for the soul” (Leviticus 17:11)

As we approach the passion-week of Jesus Christ (the Passover, Palm Sunday, and Easter), I must remind you that the very core of these commemorations center and focus on the way Jesus died on the cross and what His death accomplished and accomplishes. The Bible is very clear that Jesus died by the shedding of His own blood. His death was the result of the loss of blood from His body! So, how important is the blood-work of Jesus?

I. It is so important, that the word “blood” is used approximately 300 times in the Old Testament, and 99 times in the New Testament!  (John uses the word “blood” 29 times; the writer of the Book of Hebrews uses it 21 times, and the writer Luke, 20 times)! That’s very important and critical, wouldn’t you say?!

II. Due to the limitation of space allotted, I will only provide a few of the many biblical teachings about the blood of Jesus Christ:

A.   It was shed for the forgiveness of (my, your) sins. Without its application to the sinner, there will be no forgiveness from God! Hebrews 9:22 states that “without shedding of blood there is no remission”)!

B.   It is the price God exacted from His own Son to buy the sinner out of the slave-market of sin! I Peter 1:18, 19 puts it this way, “you were not redeemed through corruptible things, …but with the precious blood of Christ!”

C.   It is the only way for one to be declared in right standing before God and escape His wrath. Paul writes in Romans 5:9, “having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him”

No other religion or ritual will get you to God and His heaven! Salvation is only through Jesus’ blood! So, ask Him to forgive you, yes you! (1 John 1:7b)!
