“The Spirit of the LORD is upon Me (Jesus), because He has anointed Me to preach the gospel (good news)to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed”(Luke 4:18)
“…for the Son of Man (Jesus Christ)has come to seek and to save that which was lost” (Luke 19:10b)
“For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved” (John 3:17)
No less than 4 times in the Gospel of Matthew it is recorded that Jesus had great compassion for those to whom He ministered:
But when He saw the multitudes, He was moved with compassion for them, because they were weary and scattered, like sheep having no shepherd. (Matthew 9:36)
And when Jesus went out He saw a great multitude; and He was moved with compassion for them, and healed their sick. (Matthew 14:14)
Now Jesus called His disciples to Himself and said, “I have compassion on the multitude, because they have now continued with Me three days and have nothing to eat. And I do not want to send them away hungry, lest they faint on the way.” (Matthew 15:32)
So Jesus had compassion and touched their eyes. And immediately their eyes received sight, and they followed Him. (Matthew 20:34)
They were the poor, the broken-hearted, those who were held captive, the blind and those who were oppressed. He ministered to the Jews and non-Jews as well. He spent time with individuals as well as gave encouragements to multitudes. He fed those who were hungry and had an incredible love for children. The shortest verse in the Bible (John 11:35), puts it very succinctly, “Jesus wept!” He was AND IS a compassionate God!
I have been to hospitals and nursing homes often and have been able to notice those who were suffering severely. I watched how a number in the medical field have dedicated their time and efforts to help those who were suffering physically, mentally, and emotionally as well.
I’ve observed how some go to the grocery store and are barely able to afford a few food items. Then there are the homeless, the fatherless, the widows, the orphans, the elderly, and those who are suffering from addictions or depressions.
Yes, dear factory-worker, office employee, ditch-digger, and other traveler through this life, Jesus is full of compassion and bids you turn to Him for salvation from sin and the gift of eternal life with Him in heaven. Dear lost soul, Christ gave His life for you so that you would give your life to Him! Yes, I certainly care, but He cares far more than I can! That’s why He came, and that’s why I am writing to share this with you.
