“The fool has said in his heart, ‘There is no God.” They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none who does good” (Psalm 14:1; 53:1)
1. Our world is full of atheists – – those who in some way deny the existence of the God of the Bible. Entire nations and/or their governments (such as those of Russia, China, etc.) dictate this ideology. Eggheads around the globe (such as Richard Dawkins of Oxford and Christopher Hitchens) are atheists who vehemently promote this antagonism against God. Then there are ordinary, every-day folk who espouse the same viewpoint, and are found in many religious and secular walks of life!
2. I find it necessary at this point to explain that there are three kinds of atheists:
- The 1st is the ASSERTIVE kind: he dogmatically asserts that there is no God.
- The 2nd is the ACTUAL kind: he chooses to believe there is no God.
- The 3rd is the APPLICATIONAL kind: he lives as though there is no God.
Here is how wise king Solomon responds to atheists around the world:
1. RECOGNIZE YOUR LIMITATIONS. Ecclesiastes 8:17 states that no one knows all there is to know especially the work of God. So how can one claim to know there is no God if he is not all-knowing (as only God is)!
2. REMEMBER YOUR LORD. Ecclesiastes 12:1 reminds man that he was created by God, the Creator of this universe and its contents (Genesis 1, 2)!
3. RECONSIDER YOUR LIABILITY. Solomon’s conclusion, probably written in his latter years, is right on target (Ecclesiastes 12:13, 14). He wrote, “Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God and keep His commandments, for this is man’s all. For God will bring every work into judgment, including every secret thing, whether good or evil!”
I do know where the fool will spend eternity when he dies – – because the God whom he disbelieved has the definitive last Word! He better learn to pray – -soon!
