LOST TREASURE: THE GREAT HYMNS OF THE FAITH

“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and HYMNS and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord” (Colossians 3:16)

It may be well to first understand what I mean by the word “hymn:” Basically, it is a Christian or Bible-based song. It may be of interest to you that some of these hymns have been sung and/or played instrumentally for literally hundreds of years! One of the best-known hymns throughout our land was written by a wretched slave-trader who was saved by the grace of God. Who has not heard the hymn “Amazing Grace (how sweet the sound, that saved a wretch like me)?”  John Newton wrote those familiar words in 1779!

How about Christmastime, when “Silent Night” is heard in various parts of the world. It was translated into approximately 300 languages and can be heard in the streets and villages and marketplaces and homes throughout the world. It was written around 1817 in Austria andis thereknown as “Stille Nacht, Heilige Nacht.”

When one visits nursing homes, most residents there request those wonderful hymns, “The Old Rugged Cross,” or “Rock of Ages, Cleft for Me.”

Some of you remember George Beverly Shea singing “Blessed Assurance, Jesus is Mine” or “How Great Thou Art” during the Billy Graham crusades in the 50’s and 60’s, when thousands upon thousands of people gathered to hear this evangelist preach the Gospel (Good News) in almost every continent of the world!

These are the great hymns, as well as numerous others, that are quickly disappearing from our homes, streets, and churches. These, unlike so many other more recent compositions, have stood the test of time!

Don’t let these hymns die out. Please kindly approach your Pastor and/or music leader and ask if he would re-introduce these wonderful hymns of the faith. These hymns will warm your heart, encourage your soul, and bring comfort to you. They will often be offered as prayers and sung with a longing for God Himself! Treasure these treasures!
