NAMING CHRISTMAS

“For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given; and the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of His government and peace there will be no end, upon the throne of David and over His kingdom, to order it and establish it with judgment and justice from that time forward, even forever. The seal of the LORD of hosts will perform this”

(Isaiah 9:6-7

Did you ever pay attention to the fact that the name “Christmas” contains the very name of the One on whom it focuses? Yes, that name is “Christ” (the Greek word for the Hebrew “Messiah)!” It speaks of the One who is anointed, appointed, and blest by God for special functions. Several of these are listed in the following order:

1. WONDERFUL COUNSELOR – – He will be an astonishing advisor and decider

2. MIGHTY GOD – – This Child will be the Almighty God (taking on human form)

3. EVERLASTING FATHER – – He is eternal – – the originator & generator of all

4. PRINCE OF PEACE – – He will be the chief captain of man’s total well-being

5. He can only be God’s Son (and God does have a Son) Cf. Proverbs 30:4

6. He will be the governor and eternal peace-giver of the entire universe

7. This Child will come from the lineage of David (2 Samuel 7:12ff.)

8. His justice and judgments will be eternal. Injustice(s) will no longer exist

9. Jehovah God Himself will see to it – – it will happen – – count on it!

For many the name “Christmas” signifies a holiday season, gift-giving, celebrations of various kinds, special meals and family gatherings, tree-lighting ceremonies, cantatas and more.

Somehow we’ve lost the true significance of Christmas as described by Isaiah the prophet some 2700 years ago. Think about it: “CHRISTMAS” IS all about CHRIST! “O come, let us adore HIM, CHRIST the Lord!”
