“Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time if need”
(Hebrews 4:16)
Let’s just be honest – – we always feel that God is/was too late or that He “should have been ‘there.’” Right? Where was God when I needed Him? God could have …! Didn’t He know? Why, why, why?

I must confess that I often (more often than not) do not have an insight into the mind and actions of God. But there are some things the Bible reveals about Him that help me understand some of His actions and thoughts:
- He is all wise.
- He is all powerful.
- He cannot make mistakes – – (He is incapable of making mistakes).
- He does as He pleases, and really does not need anyone’s advice.
- His timing is always perfect, and He is always punctual – – always just on time!

If you look once again at the Hebrews 4:16 passage printed above, you will find some interesting thoughts regarding the frustrations we sometimes experience:
- Have you actually been bold enough (with humility and sincerity) to come to God in prayer? In other words, did you really beseech God to show you His guidance, help, power, and wisdom in meeting your needs? James 1:5 says that if any man lacks wisdom, let him ask of God. Have you done so?
- God’s throne is a throne of grace (this word is used twice here). Grace, if I may put it in simple terms, speaks of God’s generosity. (You may want to look up II Corinthians 8:9).
- So, how gracious is God? It begs the question, doesn’t it? Well, in this context, when you approach His throne with your (humble) prayer, He will be merciful to you and you will find His grace extended to you, often in unexpected ways: sometimes in blessings, sometimes in giving you peace, sometimes in providing resources, and sometimes in reassuring you of His power, presence and protection.
- But let’s not forget the last phrase – – “in time of need!” This word in the NT is used 9 times and speaks of “just at the right or good time!” Not my good time, but God’s! His timing is always perfect – – He’s never too early and never too late! And He knows what He’s doing – – He’s in total control! THANK YOU, LORD!
