IT’S BACK TO SCHOOL TIME

“For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the first principles of the oracles of God; and you have come to need milk and not solid food” (Hebrews 5:12)

School buses are being prepared to transport students. Stores are selling student’ supplies (backpacks, clothes, etc.). Last-day opportunities to relax, (swim, vacationing, etc.), are taken advantage of. School will soon begin.

For most students there will be an advancement to the next level of study. But for a few, for several reasons (such as illness or poor grades), it may be necessary for them to remain at the same level as last year’s grade. They will need to repeat once again the lessons they were unable to finish or master.

If you think about it, the school of life is not much different! Some of us only learn the hard way – – by repeating important lessons over and over again. We often fail to build on previous experiences and/or instructions. One may recall an oft repeated phrase, “I know I should have….” Or, “why didn’t I …?”

Unfortunately, at times, it is too late to implement what we know is the right or helpful way to think or to act.

This especially holds true in the spiritual realm. We know we ought to pray to the God of the Bible. But it is not a priority until we end up in deep trouble!

Or, how about the person who knows he needs to read the Bible, God’s Word? He knows that this is where he will find comfort, guidance, hope, salvation, and sustenance. But at the moment, it’s not his priority.

Allow me one further illustration of a very common mistake: man knows that some day he will have to give an account to the Judge of the earth, but he suppresses that knowledge in order to make his conscience callous to that very real, dreadful event (Revelation 20:11-15). Foolishly, he would rather take his “chances” and learn the very hard and irreversible way! He would rather “…suppress the truth in unrighteousness” (Romans 1:18). For that person, school is over, and the closing bell has rung!
