“Inasmuch then as the children have partaken of flesh and blood, He Himself (Jesus Christ) likewise shared in the same, that through death He might destroy him who had the power of death, that is, the devil, and release those who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage” (Hebrews 2:14, 15)
Most people do not cherish the thought of dying. Dying has the ring of finality and cessation. Perhaps they feel that they haven’t accomplished their mission successfully. It could well be that they wish to avoid the pain often associated with dying. Then there is the concern of leaving loved ones or possessions behind. Certainly other reasons can be mentioned such as the fear of the unknown. And they are in bondage to their fears!
In a number of my classes I would discuss this matter with my students. More often than not they would advocate that dying was cause for concern due to the unknown. Here was my response: Could it be that the reason people are fearful of death is not because of the unknown, but because of what is inherently known?! Somewhere in the depth of man’s conscience or consciousness there is that nagging sense of accountability to a “higher being,” whom I know as the God of the Bible!
You see, the real issue is not that man is without knowledge of the only true God, but that intuitively knowing about Him, man deliberately chooses to avoid or reject Him! Here is Paul’s commentary on this matter in Romans 1:18, 19 “For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, because what may be known of God is manifest in them, for God has shown it to them” [my underline].
