Stop the World, I Want to Get Off

“But evil men and impostors will grow worse and worse, deceiving and being deceived” (II Timothy 3:13)

A common expression one hears is that “this world is going pell-mell to hell.” The meaning of “pell-mell” is, “in disorderly confusion; with reckless haste” (from The Phrase Finder). The internationally known London journalist, Melanie Phillips, wrote a classic work, entitled, The World Turned Upside Down. Her very telling subtitle says it all: “The Global Battle over God, Truth, and Power.” She has hit the nail on the head!

This world is going totally bonkers, crazy and nuts all at the same time! It is going “down the tube” faster than one can blink an eye. Evil is rampant and there seems to be no stopping to it! If I were to list the many evils in/of our world, it would take a book just to itemize them line by line.

The apostle Paul writes his last words prior to his execution on the Appian Way in Rome:

“But know this, that in the last days perilous (demonic, fierce, treacherous) times will come: For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money (literally “silver-lovers”), boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having a form of godliness but denying its power: (2 Timothy 3:1-5). (Notice that loving one’s self heads the list)! Do I need to go on? No wonder sane people want to get off! This is the age of insanity!

So, what to do? How can I survive the evils of our day? May I make a few suggestions:

  1. You cannot and will not survive without God! Jesus stated it very clearly and unmistakably: “I (Jesus) am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father (God, who is in heaven) except through Me” (John 14:6). Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ alone, and He will save you!
  2. Read, know, and trust the Bible! It alone is God’s Word. This is God’s prescription for living. [A doctor may write out a medication, but it will not do a bit of good if you do not take it as prescribed]!
  3.  Do what is right in God’s sight and avoid evil, and He will reward you for it!
