“They’re Blind?” Really?

“Let them alone. They are blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind leads the blind, both will fall into a ditch” (Matthew 15:14)

Just recently, on several occasions, someone pointed out to me that things are going awry in this world because so many are blind – – they’ve been blinded by greed or by their appetites or by many other factors, such as faulty religious beliefs (often promoted by religious leaders).

Perhaps the word “blind” is not the word my friend really wanted. So, on several occasions I suggested that the more appropriate word should be “evil!” You see, there are folks who are or have been blinded by blind leaders. And, they follow them blindly without awareness of the ditch into which they are about to descend.

Here’s my contention: there are some who are simply blind in the sense of ignorance: they are naive or oblivious. Then there are others who are deliberately blind. These are the worst kind! They simply don’t want to admit that there is evil in the world or that they themselves deliberately do what is evil – – and there are millions who don’t care how many they cheat or rob or kill or run over (as long as they are benefited by their own evil actions)! Of course, they always seem to find a rationale for their wickedness.

So, what then is evil or wickedness? It is a deliberate thought and/or act that is contrary to God’s standards (such as the 10 commandments and/or other portions of God’s Word). This deliberate blindness is what ends one up in the eternal ditch of hell, and there are many who go there (Matthew 7:13, 14)! These evil people willfully “suppress the truth” of God’s Word (Romans 1:18).

II Timothy 3:13 concludes with an earnest caution, “But evil men and impostors will grow worse and worse, deceiving and being deceived!”

BEWARE: There are all too many who are trying to destroy you, whether religiously or otherwise. They are not blind, they are evil! The psalmist prays, “Open my eyes, that I may see wondrous things from Your law.” Only reading and heeding the Word of the living God, the Bible, will keep you from blindly falling into the eternal ditch!
