“In the beginning GOD created the heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1:1)
“For there is one GOD and one Mediator between GOD and men, the Man Christ Jesus” (I Timothy 2:5)
When people use the word “God,” they typically refer to a “higher Being,” or deity – – something above and beyond the human. Most don’t understand what this term entails and millions have no qualms in taking this unique name in vain (violating the 3rd of the 10 commandments, and thus incurring God’s future wrath)!
Perhaps we should reflect thus a bit more on what we mean by the term “God:”
- GOD has no equal (Isaiah 44:8)…
- GOD is the supreme Being (Daniel 4:34-37)…
- GOD has the right to our allegiance, priorities and time (Matthew 6:33)…
- GOD is the final Authority – – He has the right to say so and the power to enforce what He says (Matthew 28:18)…
- GOD is to be the supreme value in our lives (Philippians 3:8)…
- GOD is to be the [one and only] object of awe, fear, praise, respect, thanks and worship (Revelation 4:11; 5:12)…
- GOD is this universe’s ultimate Ruler and Judge (Revelation 20:11, 12)…

This is the God who is revealed in His eternal and inexhaustible Word, the Bible. Other gods (small, lower case “g”), do not and cannot match the descriptions of Him in this Book that only He could write!
The apostle Paul differentiates the false from the real in I Corinthians 8:5, 6…“For even if there are so-called gods, whether (these may be) in heaven or on earth (as there are many gods and many lords); yet for us there is one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we for Him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, through whom are all things, and through whom we live!”
Here is the “ring” of finality (also penned by Paul): “…that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of GOD the Father (Philippians 2:10, 11)!
