Other Gods

“You shall have no other gods before Me” (Exodus 20:3).

This is the first of the Ten Commandments. And it heads the list because of its critical importance. Think about it– God is a jealous God who doesn’t want people to have competing gods such as the gods of money, pleasure, religion, humanism, atheistic evolution, and a host of other humanly devised or developed objects of worship. You may be surprised that I did not include idols or statues up to now, and that, for a reason: Most individuals immediately think of these when the term “gods” is used. But gods are essentially non-realities or non-existences which people make or imagine, and which they then worship and serve. That is what is forbidden in the second commandment, (which one major religious body has conveniently removed from its dogma).

The God of the Bible, the only true God, the Creator of this universe makes it very clear that He alone is to be worshiped and served. Better tear down those idols of yours, whether concrete or imaginary, rather than trying to tear down the Ten Commandments from your thinking or living. God really means it, He’s not kidding! (Read Exodus 20:7).
