“Now I, John, saw and heard these things. And when I heard and saw, I fell down to worship before the feet of the angel who showed me these things. Then he said to me, ‘See that you do not do that. For I am your fellow servant, and of your brothers the prophets, and of those who keep the words of this book. Worship God”‘ (Revelation 22:8, 9).
We have worship leaders, worship workshops and worship services, but we have next to no worship! Most of those who use this word have no clue what they are talking about! Our word “worship” actually comes to us from the old English “worthship,” signifying that we are to ascribe worthiness to the God of the Bible only. He alone is worthy of our praise, adoration, thanksgiving and prayers. As you read through the book of Revelation, for example, you will find several ascriptions of worship (4:8, 11; 5:9, 10, 12, 13; 7:12; 11 :17, 18; 15:3, 4; and 16:5, 6).
The God who is holy, all-might, the creator and savior of sinful mankind is worthy of power, riches, wisdom, strength, honor, glory and power! The recognition, rehearsal, remembrance of and humble response to these attributes and ascriptions of God is what constitutes worship! We are not worthy of anything — HE is! Some day, every knee shall bow before Him and confess that Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory of the Father (Philippians 2:9-11 ).
We might as well begin now! Worshiping God without practicing what His Word reveals about this ultimate subject, is a farce. Ritual and routine lead to spiritual deadness, whereas true worship leads to the glory of God and the fulfillment of our beings. “The chief end of man is to glorify God and to enjoy Him forever!”
