Life’s Most Important Question

“And he brought them (Paul and Silas) and said, ‘Sirs, what must I do to be saved?’ So they said, ‘Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved…'” (Acts 16:30, 31)

There are many questions in life and many important ones, for sure. But there is one that stands out as the most important question, and that has to do with one’s eternal destiny. Where will you spend eternity – – decades, centuries and millennia without end? Once this earthly life is done, our destiny is sealed and final – – forever!! (Read Luke 16:19-31)!   So, what must we do to be saved – – forever? Let me simplify what the Bible, the Word of God teaches:

  1. We must recognize your current condition: We have sinned against a holy God and are worthy of eternal punishment by Him (Romans 3:23). We are     totally unworthy of grace – – HIS grace! God owes us nothing except eternal separation and punishment from Him and hope (Romans 6:23a).

2. Any good work that we may attempt to appease God, including being religious, doing good deeds, being baptized, or saying canned prayers will never land us in heaven (Isaiah 64:6; Ephesians 2:8, 9). God doesn’t need our worthless offers!

3. BUT, here is the good news – – an amazing offer by God Himself. Are you ready for this? The punishment that you and I deserve was meted out on God’s own Son, Jesus Christ. He took our punishment on the cross and bore our sins! He became our substitute. Now he offers us eternal life, hope, heaven, joy, peace and a million of other blessings – – all of which are totally FREE – – to us, but it only comes through the death and resurrection of God’s only begotten Son (Isaiah 53:5, 6; John 3:16; Romans 6:23b)!

4. So what do we need to do to be assured of everlasting life? (Remember, God doesn’t want our (“good”) works)! To obtain this marvelous salvation provided by Christ alone it is imperative that we accept His gracious offer, believe in God’s Son and confess our sins and unworthiness to Him. In other words, we humbly receive His unmatched salvation by faith in His Word (John 1:23; Romans 10:17).

“For whoever calls on the name of the LORD shall be saved” (Romans 10:13)!
